On 23 September 2025, Monaliiku, the coordinator of the Out4In project, organised a national Focus Group via Microsoft Teams. The session brought together refugee and migrant women, and representatives of different NGOs to reflect on barriers, enablers, and strategies for more inclusive outdoor participation.
Barriers identified in Finland
Discussions confirmed several persistent challenges faced by refugee and migrant women when accessing outdoor activities:
- Lack of accessible information and language support
- Transport and distance challenges
- Costs of fees, clothing, and equipment
- Weather and seasonal conditions
- Limited family-oriented programmes
- Lack of cultural sensitivity in planning
Successful strategies shared
At the same time, participants highlighted positive practices that make a real difference:
- Multilingual communication and clear information
- Beginner-friendly and accessible routes
- Support for childcare and transport
- Predictable schedules and hands-on practice
- Social elements such as shared meals to strengthen community feeling
From discussion to recommendations
The insights from the Finnish Focus Group will directly inform the development of policy recommendations and practical guidelines within the Out4In project. These aim to support local authorities, organisations, and communities in making outdoor experiences more inclusive and accessible for all.
Pilot impact in Finland
Participants also reflected on the outcomes of the Finnish pilot, coordinated by Monaliiku, which combined online introductions, indoor workshops, and an outdoor excursion. The results were clear:
- 100% of participants reported increased confidence to join outdoor activities
- 100% gained new outdoor skills and tools for navigating local services
- 75% improved understanding of the local community
Many built new friendships, stronger environmental knowledge, and a greater sense of belonging
What’s next?
Based on these results, the Out4In consortium will finalise recommendations, refine its Toolkit and Local Natural Heritage Guide, and continue to promote inclusive approaches across partner countries (Austria, Finland, Italy, Spain, and Serbia).
