Avala is a low mountain south of Belgrade.

It is located around 16 km from the city center and can be reached by public transport, by car, by bicycle.  Avala belongs to Sumadija mountains and once it was the island of former Pannonian see. This mountain is also an extinct volcano from Tertiary period and consists mostly of serpentine, limestone, and magmatic rocks and is a source of lead and mercury ore. Due to its geological diversity, it abounds in various plant and animal species, some of which are protected. Because of its wealth of living organisms, it is often visited by students of various faculties in Belgrade for educational purposes. About 600 plant species live on the territory of the mountain, which is about 489ha. Beautifully wooded with wild trees and a planted pine forest, this is today one of the most popular picnic spots in Belgrade. The vegetation is mostly forest, while the meadow vegetation is limited to a small number of localities.

In addition to the partially enumerated woody species, there are several plants on Avala that are protected as natural rarities: golden chain, golden yew, cherry laurel, common holly, as well as a large number of medicinal plants and species under control of use and trade: green-winged orchid, snowdrop, sea buckthorn, boar’s foot, hare’s foot, belladonna, crow’s wort, mallard’s tooth, wood fern, female fern, soapwort, St. John’s wort, marshmallow, wild strawberry, elderberry, lungwort, yellow foxglove, red foxglove, wild foxglove, thyme, motherwort, yarrow, wormwood, elecampane, goldenrod, crocus, tongue sedge.
