Veliko Blato is a protected habitat.
It is an area that includes one or more types of natural habitats important for the conservation of one or more populations of wild species and their communities. The “Veliko Blato” area, together with the forests of Makiša, Lake Sava, Ada Ciganlija and Međica on the Sava, Veliki and Mali Ratni Island, the islands of Forkontumac, Čakljanac, Štefanac and Donja Ada on the Danube, Široka Bar (City Forest) near Pancevo (1160-1149km) and the Foreland of the left bank of the Danube is an important area for birds (Important Bird Area – IBA) “Confluence of Sava and Danube”Veliko Blato is a large, shallow lake surrounded by reedbeds, offering a circular walk of 6 km, but the eastern side holds better habitats and far more birds.
The lake is a private property, run by the Mika Alas fish farm company and visitors are expected to obtain a visitation permission in advance. It is located in Krnjača, an urban neighborhood of Belgrade, Serbia. It is located in the municipality of Palilula, around 10km from Belgrade city center. It is characterized by the remains of wet habitats and characteristic representatives of the living world. A total of 191 species of plants were recorded in the zone of vegetation covered by protection, of which 14 are protected by the Rulebook on the Proclamation and Protection of Strictly Protected and Protected Wild Species of Plants, Animals and Mushrooms, 120 species of birds, 9 species of amphibians, 4 species of reptiles and one strictly protected species of fish.
