Viniculture in Vienna; Vienna, Austria

Heuberg, Wien, Österreich

The trail starts at the final station of underground line U4.

Bus 38A takes you to the first stop of the route, the Lebensbaumkreis (The Tree of Life Circle) near Cobenzl. Interactive sound columns provide information, while classical music enhances the atmosphere. It’s a place of reflection that combines nature, culture, and recreation.

From there we are following the path towards Kahlenberg and Nussberg (walking is possible or taking a bus!) to take a tour through the Viennese vineyards. The Cobenzl, Kahlenberg, and Nussberg areas in Vienna are part of the UNESCO Vienna Woods Biosphere Reserve, rich in biodiversity. The landscape includes oak and beech forests, dry grasslands, and vineyards. Rare species like the green lizard and the Ural owl live here, alongside many birds, bats, and insects.

Native plants and wild herbs thrive on the sunny slopes, making the area vital for nature conservation and recreation. Viennese wine culture holds a unique place in the world, as Vienna is the only capital city with significant vineyards within its city limits. Wine production has been a tradition for centuries, deeply rooted in the city’s identity. The local wine taverns, known as ‘Heurige’, are central to social life and offer a direct connection between producers and consumers. Viennese wine, particularly the Gemischter Satz, reflects the region’s diversity and commitment to quality, sustainability, and cultural heritage.

The path stretching from Cobenzl to Kahlenberg and Nussberg is furthermore covering the Lebensbaumkreis / The Tree of Life Circle, a spiritual nature site featuring 40 trees inspired by Celtic tree signs. Each tree represents specific birth dates and personality traits.
